Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?
Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling in our thumbs and wrists. Our thumbs are not made for pushing small buttons, over and over. Scientists call this problem RSI.
We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many patients with RSI. She said we needed to see how much time we were spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10-15 minutes at once, we could have problems in the future.
We also talked with Dr Harjeet Deepa who treats RSI patients. He told us that the youngest patient she had treated was a five-year-old girl. She wasn’t doing well at school, so her parents took her for treatment. It was found that she had such bad RSI in her hands, she couldn’t hold a pencil.
As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can also cause the same problem. So, more and more people could find themselves with RSI.
Many university students and teenagers have RSI, as they do not know the risks of spending so much time using computers, video games and mobile phones. If we don’t do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

Take a look at teenagers around, dressed in baggy-pants (宽松裤), drinking soft drinks such as coke, reading Japanese cartoons. Whether you are in Beijing, Wuhan or Hong Kong, you will get the same impression. But should we copy others or should we maintain (保留) our differences?
It sounds convenient that people around the world speak the same language, dress in the same style, eat the same food and play the same games. If the world was like this, you won’t feel strange in any corner of world. But just imagine living in such a strange world. How dull and colorless it would be!
Different kinds of food that people can taste, the colorful and fashionable clothes that we dress in and different languages we speak are all part of the different cultures that our ancestors left us. These differences represent their creativity (创造力) and talent. And we all enjoy different cultures in our daily lives. When you travel to other places, you want to see different things. When you talk to foreigners you expect to listen to interesting stories. These differences in culture are what make life colorful.
But the whole world is shrinking into a small village as globalization (全球化) takes effect and many different cultures are disappearing. In most big cities around the world people wear the same clothes. Fast food stores are everywhere. Hollywood movies are kicking traditional performing arts out of our lives. The colors of our life are disappearing.
There is joke that even the panda and zebra want to live a colorful life. So let’s take action to protect our colorful culture before it becomes as simple as black and white.
It’s not difficult. Learning some folk songs, trying on a traditional clothing and even eating local food instead of going to KFC can help. And we’re sure you will enjoy it.

A. explain cultural differences B. convince readers to maintain cultural differences
C. predict the future of globalization D. show some cultural phenomena(现象)

50. The author talks of all the following cultural phenomena except _______.
A. food B. clothing C. language D. architecture

We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of day. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. It is not as simple as we might think, as new experiments have shown. In one experiment, flowers were kept in darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of the day, did not open as they usually do. In fact, they continued to open at their usual time. This shows that they have some mysterious way of knowing the time.
Their sense of time does not depend on information from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind of “inner clock”. This discovery may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants but also animals including man have this “inner clock” which controls working of their bodies and their activities.
Human beings, then, are also controlled by this mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such
things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food. And our ability to concentrate.
51. One experiment was done for finding out .
A. when different flowers open and close
B. if flowers have a mysterious way of knowing the time

第三节、(one possible version)
Good morning, everyone,
I am Li Hua from Guanghua Middle School. The topic of my speech is “Let’s Ride Bicycles”.
It is known to us that cars bring us a lot of problems. Air pollution, the most serious one, has make it hard for humans to live. And with more and more people buying private cars, traffic becomes heavier and heavier. Therefore, it’s time for us to choose another transport, that is, cycling.
There are many good reasons to ride bicycles. Firstly, compared to cars, bicycles are much cheaper to buy. What’s more, bicycles are more environmentally friendly than cars, because they hardly make noises. Cycling has become a new trend around the world, a good way of energy saving and low-carbon life. Last but not least, cycling is an excellent way to keep fit and live longer. By riding bicycles, you can cut down your risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure and other illnesses.
So I think, riding bicycles actually has great effects on us. Let’s ride bicycles from today on!
That’s all. Thank you!
