  六、阅读理解(共20小题,计35分。第一节15小题,计30分;第二节5小题,计5分)

  A

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court(法庭).

After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was shocked. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I'd have to have a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me to find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party(政党) was responsible(负责任的) for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss(解雇)him. And he made me pay him $770.

Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time, and I left without getting a cent. My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America, money is everything. It is more important than friendship honor or professional morality(职业道德). Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

  B. talk with the person responsible for the accident

  C. get well before he leaves America

  D. finally get the responsible party to pay for his injury

  43. The word " charge " in the passage means____.

  A. be responsible B. accuse C. ask as a price D. announce

  44. Both the doctor and the lawyer in this passage are very___.

  A. friendly B. greedy C. professional D. busy

  45. What conclusion can you draw from this story?

  A. Going to court is something every common in America

  C. There are more bad sides in America than good sides

  D. Money is more important than other things in the US

  B

“Mummy, I don’t know what to play with ”Steve interrupts his mother, who is talking to a friend, for the fourth time. You’ve got a room full of toys!” his mother says,

impatiently. In fact it is the jumble of toys which is to blame for four-year-old Steve’s

lack of interest in his dolls, cars and stuffed (packed) animals. Each morning he tips out three washing baskets of toys all over his floor, listlessly pulls out something and shortly after is standing at his mother’s desk or following her into the kitchen saying: “My Mom, I’m bored.”

A family therapist(心理医生) explains why children lose interest when they have a whole “toy shop” at home. “According to their brain development, little children are not in a position to judge the quality of a variety of things at once. There is always just one favorite toy for the moment. All the rest is left lying about.” What can parents do to stop their children from being oversupplied with toys? Under no conditions simply make something disappear without the child’s knowledge. If he takes no more notice of a toy,

a parent can ask if it can be stored or given away. Be warned though the child will always say he / she wants it then! A talk with relatives and friends may also help. Lyn is

the mother of four-year-old Jessie, and we like her way. A small set of shelves in her child’s room holds the toys and books that are the current (at present) favorites. When it seems to her that her daughter is tired of these toys, they put them away in a box together and select some other toys from a cupboard in another room. . The box of old toys goes into the cupboard. When her child says she is “bored”, they also get something

from her cupboard----it may be something she has had for some time but because she

hasn’t seen it for a while it is almost like a new toy.

Some favorite toys stay out all the time, and there is collection of dolls which sits in the corner, but in this way Lyn has found that she has fewer toys to put away at the

end of the day and her daughter always has something “fresh” to play with.

  46. Steve interrupted his mother several times because________.

  A. he felt uninterested in his toys C. he didn’t have enough toys to play with

  B. he disliked his mother’s guest D. he hoped his mother would play with him

47.According to the therapist, children often complain that they have nothing to play with because ______.

  A. they can’t play alone for a long time.

  B. they are too young to play with so many toys

  C. they are too lazy to pick out their favorites

  D. they lack the ability to value too many things at a time.

  48. Which is the following can be used in the place of “jumble”?

  A. simple choice B. mixture in disorder C. ordinary appearance D. same shape

  49. Which is the advice given to parents in the text?

  A. Buy fewer toys for their children

  B. Form good habits for their children

  C. Spare some time to play with their children

  D. Put some toys away without telling their children

  50. The passage may be taken from _______.

  A. An ad B. A magazine C. A story D. A newspaper

  C

Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s. The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach(菠菜) to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people’s diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetable.

People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach can not make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs---folic acid.

It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.

  One possible version:

Nowadays, with the growing popularity of computers, more and more people are paying less and less attention to their handwriting.

According to a recent survey, about 85.8 percent of middle school students think that their handwriting is poor. Yet for various reasons, many students don’t want to improve their handwriting.51.5 percent students think that they can just use a computer, so there is no need to waste time improving their handwriting. And 32.3 percent believe that they are so busy with the study that they don’t have time to practice. 10.9 percent think that practicing handwriting is useless.

As the saying goes, “Writing style shows the man”. Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial, especially for middle school students. Therefore, in my opinion, more emphasis should be placed on this aspect in future.
