  A

When I was a girl of 10, I joined the school cross-country team and practiced twice a week, on the 1.8-km course. I’d never really run before and I thought the course would be easy. It was a real shock when I ran out of breath within the first few minutes. I never realized how tiring running could be but I didn’t think about giving up.

Over time, I did get a little bit faster. However, I was really slow. In races, I would finish close to last. I’d always have to stop more than once, especially in the longer races, which were 2.5 to 2.8 km. After every race, I’d go home and cry. But I still didn’t stop running, holding onto that picture of crossing the finishing line and finally doing well.

Then one of my friends joined the team, too. She could run easily and even came in the 18th place in a big race! I felt so slow and my confidence was lower than ever. I became so nervous when I thought of the races that I wanted to give up badly.

Still, I refused to. Finally, I realized that the reason I was so nervous was that I was always worried that I wasn’t ready for them. So a few weeks before the next 2.8-km race, I practiced running almost 3 km every day, which helped me improve my pace.

When the time came for the big race, all that practicing really paid off. I stopped only once and my pace was so much better.

I realized that I’d finally gotten happiness with running. But the funny thing was, it didn’t come from doing better. Instead, it came from the fact that I had tried hard and never given up.

The Giant Water Lily is native to Brazil. The flower itself is white and only blooms at night. The flower is nearly the size of a soccer ball. The most interesting thing about this flower is its large leaves. The leaves can grow up to 46 centimeters in size and can hold up to 136 kilograms.

The Giant Water Lily grows in the shallow waters; in its native Brazil and in the Amazon it grows all year long. But it does not grow year round in areas where it is not a native species(物种); it only grows and reproduces in the summertime when the climate is warm. The Giant Water Lily adapts(使适应) to the environment by growing thorns (刺) on the bottom of the leaves to protect itself from fish and other predators that might want to eat it.

There are two sides to the Giant Water Lily’s effect on the living things. The negative part is that no other plant species can live under the Giant Water Lily due to its size. The water lily’s leaves are massive in size and they cover most of the surface of the water. This means that no sunlight can reach the rest of the water. Therefore no algae (海藻) can grow, and with no food source, animals that feed on algae cannot exist. On the other hand, Giant Water Lilies are very helpful to some species, for example, the Lily Trotter. The Lily Trotters walk on the leaves and obtain(获得) their food source (insects) from the water lily.

Now researchers are trying to discover more about the characteristics of this particular species.

  A. there is not enough space for them to live in

  B. the water Lilies’ leaves have tough thorns

  C. there is no sunlight that’s needed for their living

  D. some animals lack food source

  54. What can be inferred from the text?

  A. The Giant Water Lily is favorable to many insects.

  B. The Giant Water Lily can provide some species with food.

  C. Some insects prevent the growth of other species.

  D. Some insects treat the Giant Water Lily as enemies.

  Dear teachers and friends,

My name is Tom. I’m very proud that I have chosen to speak to you all today. I’m a bit nervous as I’ve never made a speech before to so many people. My topic is “How to Protect the Environment”.

As we all know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse .In some places we can’t see fish swimming in the river or trees on the hills. Some people even have no clean water to drink. So I think we must do something to protect the environment. But what can we do? How to protect our environment? For example, we can go to school on foot or by bike. We can use shopping baskets instead of plastic bags when we go shopping and we can use both sides of the paper when we write .In a word, if everyone pays more attention to our environment, there will be less pollution and our life will be better.

“There is only one earth”, I hope everyone will protect our environment well. Thanks for listening!
