  PART ONE: INTERVIEW

  (1) What do you usually wear for work?

As I’m a bank clerk, I have to wear uniform at work, in that way, we give our customers a sense of credibility and a sense of efficiency.

  (2) Do you think companies should set a dress code for their staff? (Why?/Why not?)

Yes. The way you dress reflects the professional image of the company, because you represent your company to everyone on the outside. So companies should set rules about what their staff should wear in working hours.

  (3) Is it necessary to dress smartly if you want to be promoted? (Why?/Why not?)

No, I don’t think so. You are promoted for your competence and performance in work, not for your grooming(梳洗). But of course, what you wear reflects what you are, so it’s important to wear appropriately on your job.

  (4) Will business people wear more casually in the future? (Why?/Why not?)

Yes. I think the future trend for business wear is going towards the casual, as our life tampo will be faster and people cannot possibly spend too much time grooming themselves. And if people wear casual clothes, they will feel more relaxed and give better performance in work…

  PART TWO: MINI-PRESENTATION

  What’s important when…?

Dressing for a job interview

l Being clean and neat

  l

When you go for a job interview, you have to be quite aware how the interviewers will see you. First impressions can last forever. So I think it would be most appropriate if you dress a bit conservatively---men can wear a suit, at least wear a sports jacket and a business tie, polished shoes and pressed pants;ladies can wear dress or a smart-looking pant suit and complementary blouse with stylish dress shoes. In that way, you would look very professional.

The way you dress can say as much about your personality as well as the quality of the work you do. So you should always be neat and clean in your dress. If you appear slovenly, no one can really trust you. Looking your best also shows respect for the meeting and for the interviewers.

Apart from these two points, it’s also important that you should show your good taste, for example, avoid using loud cologne or perfume, that would make you appear very vulgar.

  PART THREE: DISCUSSION

  Adopting a Business-Appropriate Dress Policy

The company you work for would like to adopt a new policy regarding workplace dress code, you have been asked to help co-ordinate the project. Discuss the situation together, and decide:

l what dress code should be set for different business situations

l how to help staff understand the importance of the dress code

A: I’m all for the idea of adopting a new workplace dress policy. I always believe what our staff wear demonstrates the values and the moral of our company.

B: And it shows your work attitude too, as the saying goes,” You are what your wear.” So we must really set rules regarding what to wear on different business occasions. In my opinion, we should base our policy on what is appropriate for the day’s activities and the amount of customer or client contact on has in one’s position.

A: Now, first of all, I think formal business attire should be worn when facing our customers and clients and at scheduled meetings. That gives people a sense of credibility and authority.

B: Yes. By looking well-groomed, neat and polished, we’ll be able to gain the trust of our customers, because they’ll associate our professional image with the quality of the business we run.

A: Right. But at all other times, staff can wear business causal attire. This would include casual slacks, khakis, dress shirts, golf shirts, collared sports shirts, sweaters or skirts. Besides these, shoes should be dress shoes or loafers, I don’t think casual sandals, slippers, and clogs are appropriate in workplace.

B: So we should not only write down what should be worn, we should also make clear what should not be worn in workplace.

A: Right. The unacceptable apparel also includes: blue jeans, T-shirts, shorts, sweat suits, athletic attire, athletic shoes, these are far too casual.

B: But the problem is that our staff need to understand the importance of their clothing choices. You see, some members might think that our dress code stifles their personal style or something.

A: We should let them know that the way they dress at work reflects the company image, so it’s actually a matter of company image, not just personal dress style. Nobody will do business with the company if its staff look unkempt.

B: We can put our new dress policy on our staff newsletter and Intranet, and can also gather suggestions from our staff about appropriate workplace clothes.

A: We can also hold training sessions to make sure everyone is clear on the standards.

  B: Good.

  A: 是的。

  A: 是的。

  (1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of a compulsory staff uniform?

Wearing corporate uniform can enhance the professional image of the company, as staff members look neat and sharp in uniforms. But there’s also disadvantages—uniforms don’t always suit individual tastes and sometimes not even the working needs.

  (2) How important is it to consider the quality of dress material?

I think it’s very important, because it’s also a matter of image. If your dress is made of shiny and showy materials, you look very vulgar; and if you use cheap materials, you will look very slovenly in that.

  (3) Do you think staff should always wear formal clothes in workplace? (Why?/Why not?)

No, it depends on what position you hold—if your job requires you to have direct contact with customers, clients or investors, you have to dress formally. Other than that, you can wear something casual, but there’s a bottom line of course, you have to know what clothes are unfit in workplace.

  (4) Do you think employees work more efficiently in casual clothes? (Why?/ Why not?)

No. I don’t think so. It’s difficult to take business seriously if you’re wearing very casual clothes like Capri pants or sandals. Well, I think only when you look neat, then you will feel neat and your work will be neat.

  (5) Whant should companies do to increase employees’ awareness of company image? (Why?)

Companies should place a lot of importance on its professional image---how their customers and competitors look at them. Companies should hold lectures or training sessions on how their staff members should dress themselves or behave on public occasions, to maintain a good public image.
