  (Text 7)

  Now here is the news.

Last night, for the third time this week, police and the County Council officials had to turn and run when they were showered with boiling water from the upstairs window of No.10 Trafalgar Street. They were hoping to speak to Mrs. Florence Hamilton, an 83-year-old widow, who is still refusing to leave her home. Every other house in the street has been demolished. The Council are planning to build four 20-storey blocks of flats in the area. All the other residents agreed to move when the Council offered to provide them with new flats nearby. On Tuesday evening a social worker who wanted to speak to Mrs. Hamilton was attacked and badly bitten by one of her dogs. (C) (C)

W: To whom, did you say?

  M: George Hatton.

W: I'm sorry but no one of that name lives here, What number are you calling?

  M: 123-4567.

W: That's our number all right but no Mr. Hatton lives here. This is the Smith residence.

M: Oh, I must have the wrong number. I'm terribly sorry.

W: That's all right. I hope you find Mr. Hatton. Good-bye.

  M: Goodbye and thank you. (A) (A) (C)

W: Have you seen my glasses?

M: No, where did you leave them?

W: Right here by the telephone.

  M: Are you sure?

W: Yes, I'm sure! I saw them here five minutes ago.

M: Maybe you left them in the living room.

  (Text 10)

W: Excuse me, Dr. Tyler, your secretary said I should come right in.

M: Please do, Jenny. How can I help you?

W: I need to get your signature on my schedule card here, on the line above advisor's spproval.

M: Sure, but let's look at it over together first. How many courses do you have here.?

  W: six.

M: Six? That's quite a heavy load. Any particular reason?

W: I have to drop my chemistry course last semester when I were in a hospital, so I need to take it again.

M: So you've already learnt a lot of the material.

W: Right. And calculus is a part of the second year requirement.

M: Let's see, chemistry, calculus, Oh, I see you'll be my seminar on modern American novel.

W: Yes, I'm looking forward to it and romantic poetry seminar, too.

M: Two seminars? That is rather a lot. Can you handle the work?

W: I think so. The introductory economics is very easy and so is the musical course.

M: Well, then I'll be happy to sign the card. However, I insist that you come see me after the first week of classes so we can make sure this isn't too much for you.

  W: That's the promise, (A) (A) (C) (C) (C)
