Text 1

M: Why don’t you just tell Mr. Johnson how you feel?

W: I’m just so angry that I don’t know what I would say to him!

Text 2

W: It’s amazing that you got such a high bonus.

M: Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Bonuses depend on company performance, and I worked overtime almost every day.

Text 3

M: Diana, I think Friday is a bad night for a party. Everybody is always too tired to stay up all night.

W: All right. Let’s make it one day later.

Text 4

M: For the last time, please accept my offer! I know exactly what these things are supposed to cost. I’ve been in this business for over twelve years, so I know what I’m talking about.

W: Sir, perhaps you haven’t heard me clearly. We only sell items at fixed prices here. All prices are final, I’m afraid.

Text 5

W: Honey, I’m going downtown. Do we need anything from the grocery store?

M: We need some steaks and some corn for the barbecue tonight. And maybe you could get some stamps afterwards.

W: All right.

Text 6

W: Hello, young man. Be a good boy and help an old woman cross the street, would you?

M: Of course, madam. I’d be glad to.

W: Thank you so much. I’m afraid these legs don’t move as fast as they used to!

M: Well, I think you’re looking very healthy. By the way, where are you going today?

W: Oh, I’m just going to the drugstore over there. I’ve got to pick up some medication for my husband.

M: Well, I will wait for you outside the drugstore and help you back across the street whenever you’re ready.

W: You are so kind!

Text 7

M: Have you seen Dan the Bear?

W: No, I haven’t.

M: Oh, well, he’s supposed to go onstage in 10 minutes. All the kids are waiting for him to sing.

W: Hmm... Maybe he’s out by the fish tank giving away balloons and talking with the dolphin trainer. Did you check there?

M: Yes, I did, but they said they hadn’t seen him. If you see him, please tell him that he’s needed on the small stage as soon as possible.

W: Okay, I’ll send a radio message out to all of the security officers and have them look for him. I’m sure he’s on his way right now.

M: Great. Thank you so much for your support. Will I see you at the bar after work tonight?

W: I think I’ll go there a bit later. I want to get a haircut and change clothes first.

M: Great. I’ll buy you a drink if you can get Dan the Bear onstage on time.

W: Okay, it’s a deal.

Text 8

M: Hey! Long time no see.

W: Hi! How are you? How was your weekend?

M: It was fantastic. I had so much fun. I wish it had been longer. How was yours?

W: Oh, you don’t want to hear about it. Anyway, what did you do that was so fantastic?

M: Well, I went snowboarding on Saturday, and I went to my grandparents’ house on Sunday.

W: How fun! It sounds like you were busy. I wish I had gone snowboarding. Maybe I’ll go this weekend. Aren’t you tired after your busy weekend?

M: A little, but it was a productive weekend, so I’m feeling okay. I had been planning to visit my grandparents for a long time, and I finally got some time to do it. Did you just stay in the dorm all weekend?

W: Well, I rented a bunch of DVDs and watched them all. That is why my eyes are swollen.

M: I can see that. Oh, let’s hurry! Professor Don will be mad at us if we are late again!

Text 9

W: Hey there. I’m your neighbor. My name is Shirley.

M: Hi, Shirley. I’m Bob. It’s nice to meet you.

W: Nice to meet you, too.

M: Please come in.

W: Here is a little gift for your family. It’s a calendar with all the community events on it.

M: Thank you! I really appreciate it.

W: Since we are neighbors, if you need any help with anything, please feel free to ask me.

M: I will. Actually, I am worried about the security of this community because my house has been robbed twice before.

W: Oh don’t worry about that. There are security guards on duty 24 hours a day.

M: Really? That’s good. Are there any supermarkets in the neighborhood?

W: Of course. There is a Carrefour nearby. I’ll take you there sometime if you want.

M: Terrific!

W: By the way, there will be a party for all the new neighbors the day after tomorrow. I hope I will see you there.

M: I’ll be there.

W: Great. I’ve got to go. See you later!

M. OK. Come and visit anytime.

W: Thanks. I will!

Text 10

Deep Spring is an American college. It is an unusual college. It is located high in the mountains in California, not in a college town. The campus is a collection of old buildings with no beautiful classrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is its library. Students can use the 17000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowded because there are only 24 students at the college, and they are all male. There are only five professors. These teachers believe in the college, but they are not well-paid. In fact, they only get paid about 9000 dollars a year. The college gives teachers and students something more important than money —peace and quiet. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students are there to learn and they cannot run away from their problems because there is no place to run to. At most colleges, students can close their books and go to a film, or they can go out to restaurants or parties, but the students at Deep Springs have completely different activities. They can talk to each other or their teachers, or they can go out for a walk in the mountains, and that’s about it. Deep Springs is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. There isn’t even one television set on campus.
