Qingdao is a large city of the northern Shandong Province, and was developed as part of state-planning. With a long history, Qingdao is of national historical and cultural importance. In response to Qingdao regaining sovereignty, the May 4th Patriotic Movement of 1919 is a defining moment of modern Chinese history. Qingdao is an economic hub of Shandong province, and was amongst China’s first coastal cities to lift isolationism. Moreover, it is world renowned as a city of beer and sailing.
