This year is a memorable one for Inner Mongolia autonomous region. 70 years ago, the first autonomous region forethnic minorities was established here. Since then, all ethnic groups across the region have come together for a common cause and made impressive achievements in development and prosperity, which constitutes a remarkable chapter in the history of regional autonomy of ethnic minorities. Today, under the leadership of the Central Committee with Comrade at the core, Inner Mongolia has taken on a new look and refreshed global public understandingof this region with its major achievements.
The first major achievement is greater exposure to the world. The ancient 5,000-km Tea Road, which travelled through Inner Mongolia, was a major trade route that connected Asia and Europe. Today the Belt and Road Initiative has delivered new growth momentum to this region. For example, Chinese freight trains travel through it to European countries; the profile of China-Mongolia Expo is rising; and the China-Mongolia-Russian Pilot Cooperation Zone is well under construction. In addition, Mongolia has 4,200-km international borderlines and 18 open ports, and enjoys unique geographicadvantages. And with that, it is opening wider and reaching out to the rest of the world on a larger scale.
The second major achievement is strengthened ecological protection. Inner Mongolia suffered enormous losses from desertification, which still poses a threat to two thirds of countries and one fifth of the global populationtoday. In the past decades, however, local residents have strived to explore a path to green development by promoting major environmental projects, including the Three-North Shelter Forest Program, and by converting cultivated land back into forests and grazing areas back to grassland. They have reduced the area of both decertified land and sandy land for ten consecutive years, and developed a Chinese model of desertification control that promotes economic growth, environmental protection and poverty reduction simultaneously. As a result, they have garnered recognition of the United Nations and the wider international community.
