  1. rule out

  ①If you rule out a course of action, an idea, or a solution, you decide that it is impossible or unsuitable. 不考虑;排除

  例:The Treasury Department has ruled out using a weak dollar as the main solution for the country's trade problems.

  财政部已经不考虑使用疲软美元作为解决该国贸易问题的主要方法。

  ②If something rules out a situation, it prevents it from happening or from being possible.阻止…发生;使….不可能

  例:A serious car accident ruled out a permanent future for him in farming.

  1986年的一起严重车祸使他永远无法务农了。

  2. run afoul of

  If you run afoul of someone or something, you do something that causes problem with them

  例: All of them had run afoul of the law at some time or other.

  3. home in on

  ①if you home in on one particular aspect of something, you give all your attention to it

  例:The critics immediately home in on the group’s essential members.

  fallout /ˈfɔːlaʊt /:

  ①dangerous radioactive dust that is in the air after a nuclear explosion (核爆炸后的)放射性坠尘

  ②the bad results of a situation or an action 后果;余波

  例:Grundy lost his job in the fallout from the incident.

  hunch / hʌntʃ /

  verb:[intransitive ,  transitive ] to bend the top part of your body forward and raise your shoulders and back 弓身;弓背;耸肩

  例:She leaned forward, hunching over the desk.

  她身体前倾,伏在写字枱上。

  例:He hunched his shoulders and thrust his hands deep into his pockets.

  他耸着肩,双手深深地插进衣袋。

  Noun: a feeling that sth is true even though you do not have any evidence to prove it 预感;直觉

  例:It seemed that the doctor's hunch had been right.

  看起来医生的直觉是对的。

  I had a hunch (that) you'd be back.

  我有预感你会回来。

  to follow/back your hunches 凭直觉做事

  demure/ dɪˈmjʊr/

  ①(of a woman or a girl 女子 ) behaving in a way that does not attract attention to herself or her body; quiet and serious 娴静的;端庄的

  例:a demure young lady

  娴静的年轻女士

  ②suggesting that a woman or girl is demure 显得(女子)庄重的

  例:a demure smile 矜持的微笑

  a demure navy blouse with a white collar

  严肃庄重的白领海军军服上衣

  exhort/ ɪɡˈzɔːrt/

  ( formal) to try hard to persuade sb to do sth 规劝;敦促;告诫

  Exhort sb to do sth

  例:The party leader exhorted his members to start preparing for government.该党领袖敦促党员着手准备筹建政府的工作。

  Exhort sb to sth

  例:They had been exhorted to action.

  已经告诫他们采取行动。

  Exhort (sb) + speech

  例:‘Come on!’ he exhorted (them).

  “快点!”他敦促(他们)道。
