For decades, China has witnessed rapid economic growth and huge improvements in the living standards of its citizens, but these achievements come at a huge cost to the environment. We believe that by learning lessons of the past, we can find better ways forward. Therefore, China now takes robust efforts to promote ecological civilization and green, circular and low-carbon development. It has integrated climate actions into medium- and long-term plans for economic and social development, and focused on climate change mitigation and adaption simultaneously. In addition, it has taken legal, administrative, technological and market-based measures to ensure the implementation of relevant programs. China’s total renewable power capacity and new renewable capacity account for 24% and 42% of the global total respectively. And with that, China is the world’s largest country in terms of energy conservation and application of new energy and renewable energy.
In line with a balanced approach to upholding principles and pursuing interests, China takes an active part in global cooperation against climate change. Over recent years, the government has honored its commitments to South-South cooperation on climate change. It supports developing countries, especially the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states, in addressing this global challenge. As part of its growing international assistance, China in September pledged 20 billion yuan for a China South-South Climate Cooperation Fund. And in 2020, it will build 10 low-carbon demo zones and 100 climate change mitigation and adaptation programs, and offer training programs for 1,000 climate-related professionals in other developing countries. Also, it will continue international cooperation in clean energy, disaster prevention and relief, environmental protection, climate-adapted agriculture and low-carbon smart cities, and help these countries increase their ability to secure capital.
