  The Power of Story

When my dog Gracie disappeared six years ago, I really learned what I believe. Gracie escaped from our backyard around 2:00 p.m. We searched the neighborhood for hours but had no 21 . We put up advertisements, and by dark, we returned home, exhausted(精疲力竭).

On the second day, I called my animal doctor, the SPCA, and the animal shelter(收容所). Nothing. I felt lost.

If I knew Gracie had been 22 , I would have been heartbroken. If I knew she was caught somewhere, I would save her. If I knew she had found a better home, I would be 23 yet relieved(放心的). But how do I deal with the unknown? Wait patiently? Search endlessly? Give up?

The third day, while I was searching in the woods with my friend Rhea, I told her losing Gracie was like losing faith(信任) in everything. Rhea smiled and said, "You know, maybe Gracie’s on a great adventure." It seems 24 , but I felt better then. Rhea’s words 25 me what, as a writer, I surely have faith in: the power of story.

As one writer said, all we have is stories. It’s what holds our life together. We call stories science, some stories myth(神话), but imagine hearing for the first time that the world may be round. Such stories only become real when we 26 them. And some stories are never supported with scientific facts, but they still seem to hold true.

For example, ten years earlier, I’d dreamt that I should get a 27 , and by that evening, Gracie came into my life. When people would ask what kind of dog she was, I would say Muppet wolf terrier(小猎狗). It was something I 28 because I believed Gracie was half dog, half wolf.

So why not imagine now that she was off on an adventure exploring her wolf side?

The fourth day started with me finding a 29 on the sidewalk, I’d always thought of finding money as a good sign. And I was sure Gracie would come home on the fifth day. I guess it was another story to hold on to.

On Day Five, I was at a friend’s house when her phone rang. I knew immediately it was news about Gracie. And I was right. When I finally saw her in my hallway, I cried. "My wolf days are 30 ." Gracie seemed to say. "I’m back to being a dog".

Or so is the story I choose to believe.

  21. A. luck B. reason C. good D. problem

  22. A. kept B. sold C. stolen D. killed

  23. A. mad B. worried C. sad D. moved

  24. A. right B. strange C. reasonable D. real

  25. A. ordered B. warned C. reminded D. suggested

  26. A. hear B. know C. believe D. read

  27. A. dog B. prize C. story D. house

  28. A. looked up B. built up C. set up D. made up

  29. A. card B. coin C. phone D. book

  30. A. lasting B. exciting C. short D. over

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time — about eight hours after you wake up — your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.

Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.

In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer(遭受) less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!

If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap — even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.

  36. Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?

  A. Because it’s very hot in summer.

  B. Because you eat too much for lunch.

  C. Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night.

  D. Because your body temperature goes down at that time.

  37. What advice does the writer give on taking a nap?

  A. If your time is limited, a short nap can also help.

  B. Only people in warmer climate need to take a nap.

  C. You’d better take a nap about an hour after you have lunch.

  D. You can sleep as long as you like so that you won’t feel tired or sleepy.

  38. What can we learn about "naps" according to the third paragraph?

  A. Doctors need to take naps while employers don’t.

  B. Taking naps is helpful for people’s health in spring and summer.

  C. If you take naps every day, you’ll have less risk of heart disease.

  D. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.

  39. What can we infer(推断) from the passage?

  A. You will feel less sleepy if you sleep for a long time.

  B. Taking a nap whenever you want will do good to your health.

  C. If you get up at 6:30 am, you’d better take a nap at about 2:30 pm.

  D. Sleeping for eight hours and you’ll feel sleepy a short period later.

  40. What would be the best title for the text?

  A. Just For a Rest. B. All For a Nap.

  C. A Special Sleep Pattern. D. Taking Naps in Warmer Climate.

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy a holiday present. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.

I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a band basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter(收款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.

Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. "You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you," said the woman. "It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you’ll pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now."

Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.

I would like to say "thank you" to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in a fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.
