Currently, there is an argument that non-academic courses like music and sports should be cut off, because they have no serviceable values. Personally, this contention is indefensible and overpasses the positive impacts of these courses on the growth of children. My reasons will be explored as below. Admittedly, in school education, academic courses should be given the priority over music and sports, because the former is practically more helpful and beneficial. For example, by studying math, a typical academic subject, a child can acquire basic skills of coping with numbers and calculation, as well as cultivate abilities of critical thinking and reasoning. That is to say, math plays a role of doorway for children’s further education, future career and daily life. In comparison, there are very limited pragmatic effects of non-academic subjects on children’s future employment. Obviously, no matter how well a student can play football or piano, he or she in adulthood fails to be proficient in work-oriented technologies, or skilled and knowledgeable for accomplishing specific tasks in workplace. However, I strongly believe non-academic courses should remain, in terms of their irreplaceable benefits. Firstly, they make great contributions to sharpening some virtues of children. For example, when participating in the chorus in music class, children can learn the patience, adaptability and self-discipline. Similarly, by studying great symphonies of Beethoven, young students can be inspired with the democratic concepts like freedom, equity and charity. Besides, training programs of P.E, such as long-distance running or swimming, help to cultivate children’s willpower and challenging spirit. Group games like football or volleyball, are an ideal way of building up the recognition of cooperation, competition and teamwork. In contrast, these achievements are unreachable for theories and formulas of academic subjects. Another reason against this assertion is that it overlooks the key role music and sports play in relieving stress in school education. In fact, schooling is a tensional environment full of assignments, exams, competitions, trial and error, even frustrations caused by exploring the unknown knowledge, and the solution to the nervousness is definitely the classes of music and sports. For example, by exercising in open space, or listening to the light music, children can get rid of the mental pressure and anxiety, as well as recover the pleasure, confidence and motivation which let them have active attitudes to continue their education in school. In conclusion, the argument of calling off non-academic courses is not sensible. Although music and sports have little to do with students career prospects, their positive influences on the traits and the mentality of children are invaluable.(426字)
