Don't fan the flames - the situation is already bad enough.

Such behaviours are only fanning the flames.

The speech seemed to have fanned the flames.

The project went down in flames when, at the last minute, the manager cut the budget in half.

Our plan to redecorate went down in flames when the landlord said no.

I wish he'd stop harping on about the website design. It's perfectly fine but he's insisting we change it.

I don't think I can come out tonight. My partner's harping on about how we need to save money for our holiday and I shouldn't be doing things like going out and enjoying myself.

Stop harping on about tidying my office. I'll get around to it when I've got the time. I'm just really busy at the moment.

另一个类似的表达 to go on about something 也有某人重复性地说同一个话题的意思,但它和 to harp on about something 的区别是此人并不一定是在发牢骚。

  例句

Why do you keep going on about it? We can't change it, so let's just forget it.

She keeps going on about her old boyfriend. I don't think she's over him yet.
